A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that helps to improve the appearance of the abdominal region by repairing stretched stomach muscles and tightening skin to help provide a smoother, sleek body appearance. In some cases, abdominal skin and muscles simply cannot be returned to normal without a little surgical help. Dieting and exercise can only improve the appearance of the abdomen to a certain extent, and stretched muscles or excess skin may need to be professionally repaired.

During a tummy tuck procedure, incisions are made into the abdomen to allow the cosmetic surgeon access to the muscles and tissue that lay beneath the surface. The surgeon will separate the skin from the abdomen wall so that he may then tighten loose abdominal muscles with sutures. After the muscles have been repaired, the surgeon will remove excess skin. In some situations, liposuction may be used in conjunction with an abdominoplasty to help remove stubborn fatty deposits beneath the skin.

Recovery from a tummy tuck can be a lengthy procedure and you will be required to perform only light activities for three to six weeks after surgery, depending on the extent of the procedure. Prior to your surgical procedure, your plastic surgeon will provide you with information on what you can expect after your surgery, as well as instructions on how to care for the surgical site to prevent complications.

There are some risks involved with an abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck procedure, just as there is with almost any plastic surgery treatment. The largest risk is a reaction to the general anesthesia that is commonly used to perform the surgery, however, there are other risks to be aware of as well including infection or internal bleeding. Fortunately, these complications are rare and can often be completely prevented by closely following all of the post-operative instructions provided to you by your cosmetic surgeon.
