    Breast Reduction Surgery Changes Lives

    Published on June 12, 2014

For some women, breast reduction surgery can change their entire lives.  This is particularly true for athletes, as was recently demonstrated when Simona Halep, winner at the French Open, credited her recent success to this procedure.

Simona Halep expressed she was not only uncomfortable with her breasts, but she was also experiencing back pain due to their size.  With breast reduction surgery, she went from a 34DD to a 34C bra size, a change, which she says has been instrumental in helping her achieve her recent climb in the world tennis rankings. Halep was also quoted as saying she would have had the reduction surgery even if she had not been involved in sports.  Her breast size was making her uncomfortable in regular life activities and causing back pain.

More and more women, especially young athletes, are turning to breast reduction surgery with the aim of reducing discomfort during sports and alleviating back pain from the stress and imbalance large breasts can cause.

Of the over 11 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed in 2013, 122 thousand were for breast reduction.

With a breast reduction, also known as mammaplasty, excess breast fat and glandular tissue and skin are removed to achieve a comfortable breast size proportional to your body.  The procedure is sometimes done for purely cosmetic reasons, but frequently the purpose is to alleviate the discomfort related to having overly large breasts.

Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure.  After the administration of anesthesia, your surgeon will make an incision and then carefully reduce, lift and shape the breast tissue. The incision is then brought together and closed with sutures placed deep within the breast.  Surgical tape is used to close the skin.

If you are concerned about the size of your breasts, your breasts are causing you pain in your back or shoulders, or they’re getting in the way of daily activities or sports, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery.

The results of your breast reduction surgery will be visible immediately. You will see some surgical swelling, but that will quickly subside, leaving you with breasts the perfect size for your frame and lifestyle.
