BREAST AUGMENTATION INCISIONS

You have three main options for where the incision will be made:

Breast crease: This is the most popular and preferred option. The scar is hidden and fades quickly. It also allows for better implant placement and fewer complications.
Areolar: This is the second most common option. The scar is less noticeable, but there is a higher risk of losing sensation and breastfeeding ability.
Armpit: This option avoids scarring on the breast, but it may result in wider implant spacing.
Belly button: This option is new and not recommended. It is not tested and may cause problems.

TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS

You can choose from three types of breast implants, each with a different shape, texture, size, and profile.

Silicone Gel Implants: These are the most popular choice for patients seeking a result that mimics the natural feel of breast tissue. They consist of a silicone shell filled with a semi-solid gel. Modern silicone implants are highly durable and less prone to visible rippling or wrinkling compared to other types. Because they come pre-filled, they require a slightly longer incision but offer a consistent, soft profile.
Saline Implants: Filled with sterile salt water, these implants allow for minor volume adjustments during the breast augmentation surgery in Columbus. One benefit of saline is that in the unlikely event of a leak, the solution is safely absorbed by the body. They often require smaller incisions, as they can be inserted empty and filled once in place, though they may feel firmer than silicone.
Gummy Bear Implants: Formally known as highly cohesive shaped implants, these are designed to maintain their teardrop shape even if the shell is compromised. They are firmer than traditional silicone and are ideal for patients who desire more fullness at the bottom of the breast. Due to their stable shape, these implants often feature a textured shell to help keep them in place.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY OF SURGERY?

The day before your surgery, we’ll call you with everything you need to know. You’ll need to arrive at our office about an hour before your surgery. We have two locations, so make sure you know which one to go to.

On the day of your surgery, you’ll:

Change into a gown and talk to your nurse, anesthesiologist, and surgeon
Get some medication to relax you before going to the operating room
Meet the surgical team and go to sleep
Wake up in recovery with your new breasts
Spend an hour in recovery and wear a sports bra that opens in the front

WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY LIKE?

The day after your surgery, our nurse will call you to check on you. You may experience pain, soreness, and swelling for the first three days, but we’ll provide medication to help manage it.

You’ll come back for a follow-up visit after a week. By then, you’ll feel much better, and the swelling will go down.

You may be able to return to work after three days, depending on your job and recovery. But don’t lift anything heavy or exercise for six weeks.

Recovery Timeline: What To Expect

Days 1-4: Swelling, pain, and bruising. Highest need for meds. Risk of bleeding.

Days 4-10: Showering may be allowed. Constipation from pain meds. Swelling moves down. Pain decreases but can spike at night.

Days 10-21: Lower risk of infection. Begin low-impact exercises. Nerves wake up, causing “pins and needles.” More implant displacement exercises.

Days 21-42: Healing plateaus. Rare need for pain meds. Gradual increase in physical activity.

Days 42-9 months: Scar tissue relaxes, breasts soften, and jiggle. Continued changes with body weight and life stages.

WHAT IMPLANT SIZE DO I NEED?

Don’t worry too much about cup size. Implants are measured by CCs, and the same size can look different on different people. It depends on your breast tissue, frame, and shape. Our experienced surgeon will help you choose the best size for your goals.

WHERE IS THE IMPLANT LOCATION?

You can have the implant above or below the chest muscle. Below the muscle provides a more natural look, reduces the risk of complications, and improves mammogram quality. Above the muscle may be better for some people, like weightlifters. Our surgeon will advise you on the best option.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS?

Some risks of breast augmentation are:

Bleeding that needs another surgery (5% chance)
Infection that needs implant removal (very rare, we’ll give you antibiotics to prevent it)
Visible scarring (everyone heals differently)
Loss of nipple sensation (5% chance, less likely with breast crease incision)
Implant displacement that needs correction (implant may move out of place)
Implant rupture or leak (1% chance per year, not caused by normal activities, implants have a lifetime warranty and fees coverage)
Capsular contracture (10% to 25% chance, implant may harden and change shape, needs surgery to fix, may happen again)

SALINE VS. SILICONE GEL: HOW TO CHOOSE?

Saline and silicone gel are the two main types of breast implants. They differ in their fillings, shapes, and textures. Saline implants are filled with salt water, and silicone gel implants are filled with a semi-solid gel. Both types can be round or tear-drop shaped, smooth or textured. WHAT AGE DO YOUR BREASTS STOP DEVELOPING?

Breast development varies significantly among individuals. Generally, it completes in the late teenage years. However, breasts continue to change throughout life. After glandular development finishes, breasts become very dense. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause significant increases in breast size, stretching the overlying skin and potentially resulting in breast ptosis or drooping. In later years, breast tissue is often replaced with fatty tissue.

When considering breast reduction or augmentation, it's best to wait until the breasts have been a stable size for at least a year.
