Rhinoplasty
Conveniently located to serve Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland

What is Rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty/nose surgery can be performed through an incision on either the inside of the nose (closed rhinoplasty), or at the bottom of the nose (open rhinoplasty). This procedure can take as little as one and a half hours but may take longer depending on the case. The following can be done with a rhinoplasty:
- Make the tip of the nose sharper, less prominent, smaller, narrower, or turn it upwards or downwards
- Remove any bumps on the bridge
- Make a wide bridge narrower
- Correct a deviated septum
RHINOPLASTY AND BREATHING
A rhinoplasty/nose surgery can help patients who have breathing difficulties due to problems with the septum—the part of the nose that separates the nostrils. A deviated septum can prevent air from passing through one or both nostrils and may require a surgical procedure to correct. Here at the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery, this can be treated by top plastic surgeon Dr. Bivik Shah, who will perform a procedure known as a septoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Recovery
In general, recovery from a rhinoplasty/nose surgery is relatively easy, and our staff will be there for you every step of the way. Most people experience discomfort for about three to five days after the operation, which is easily controlled with pain medication prescribed by our office. Immediately following the surgery, the surgeon places a splint on the patient’s nose to maintain the desired result during the initial recovery period. After the placement of the splint, it is important to remember to avoid moving or getting the splint wet.
Significant swelling or bruising around the eyes may occur, and can last about 10 to 14 days post-op. Patients are not fully recovered from a rhinoplasty until about six months to a year after the procedure, meaning final results may not be visible until then due to swelling.

Staff is phenomenal. Erica is kind and calming. Dr Shah is extremely professional and skilled. Very happy with my immediate results. Had multiple procedures on one day and was treated like a member of the family. Could not say enough kind words.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to have a non-surgical rhinoplasty at the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery?
Yes! We offer non-surgical rhinoplasties, also known as liquid rhinoplasties, and they are done as in-office procedures that last from 30 – 60 minutes. Liquid nose jobs are performed using filler, usually Restylane or Juvéderm, and therefore do not come with the risks that surgery would, nor do they leave scars or require downtime or recovery. Following a liquid rhinoplasty, the patient can drive himself or herself home.
Non-surgical rhinoplasties are best for people who want minor changes. The following can be done with this type of procedure:
- Small hump correction
- Tip raising
- Bridge emphasis
The non-surgical rhinoplasty is a great alternative to receiving a full rhinoplasty; however it has its limits, and therefore is not for everyone. It does not shrink the nose or narrow the nostrils, for example. Those corrections would require surgery. Liquid rhinoplasty is ideal for someone who is looking to correct mild to moderate nasal imperfections.
What types of patients usually receive a rhinoplasty?
Will I look completely different after my rhinoplasty?
You will look like yourself, only better. Many people worry that after a rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, they will look completely different. Top surgeon Dr. Bivik Shah in Columbus, Ohio, takes great pride in making sure that the results are very natural, smooth, and provide just the right amount of change to give you your desired look. During your consultation, you and Dr. Shah will discuss your exact goals and concerns in order to decide what the best course of action would be.
I just have a small bump—do I need a full rhinoplasty?
If you are interested in making minor changes to the nose with surgery, you would only need to have a minor procedure that can often be performed under IV sedation (also known as twilight anesthesia), under which you are awake. If you are looking to make minor changes without surgery, we also offer non-surgical rhinoplasties.
How long does a rhinoplasty take?
A rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, typically takes about 1 to 3 hours, depending on what is being done.
Do rhinoplasties/nose surgeries leave scars?
Sometimes—but they are not typically visible. For a “closed” rhinoplasty, all of the scars are on the inside of the nose, so they are not visible at all. For an “open” rhinoplasty, a scar is left at the bottom of the nose, but it usually heals extremely well and often becomes invisible.
Rhinoplasty Insurance Coverage
At the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery, we have a top rhinoplasty surgeon Bivik Shah, M.D., who is highly experienced in both open and closed rhinoplasties, and septoplasties to improve breathing. One of the most common questions from patients interested in getting a nose job is whether or not insurance covers the cost of the surgery.
It is important to keep in mind that insurance only pays for a procedure to correct breathing problems and does not cover the part where the nose is made to “look better.” The price of the cosmetic portion of the surgery—that is, the part that is not purely corrective—is not covered because its purpose is solely aesthetic.
Dr. Shah, a top rhinoplasty surgeon in Columbus, uses his expertise for cosmetic improvements of the nose, and therefore, though his procedures may improve breathing, our practice does not take insurance. But since we have our own surgery centers, it is usually less expensive to have the surgery in one of those than it is to have it partially paid for at a hospital. We have two operating rooms; one in Columbus (E Broad St.), Ohio, and one in Dublin, Ohio.
