WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance, function, or both. Depending on the patient’s anatomy and goals, rhinoplasty may refine the nasal bridge, tip, nostrils, overall size, or internal structures that affect breathing.
The procedure may be performed using a closed approach, with incisions inside the nose, or an open approach, with a small incision at the base of the nose. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique based on the changes being made and the level of access needed. Rhinoplasty may help:
- Refine the nasal tip
- Reduce a bump on the bridge
- Narrow a wide bridge
- Improve nasal symmetry
- Correct a deviated septum when functional concerns are involved
RHINOPLASTY AND BREATHING
A rhinoplasty surgeon may combine cosmetic nose reshaping with techniques that help improve nasal breathing. When the internal nasal structure contributes to airflow issues, surgical planning may include correcting the septum or other supporting structures.
At the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Prassinos will evaluate both appearance and function during your consultation. This helps determine whether your procedure should focus on cosmetic reshaping, breathing improvement, or both.
BENEFITS OF RHINOPLASTY
Rhinoplasty may help patients address both cosmetic and functional concerns in a single procedure. Depending on your anatomy and goals, nose surgery may help:
- Improve facial balance: Create a more balanced facial profile by refining the nose in relation to the chin, cheeks, and other features
- Reduce a bridge hump: Smooth the appearance of a hump or bump along the nasal bridge
- Refine the nasal tip: Address a bulbous, drooping, or asymmetrical nasal tip
- Improve nasal width or nostril shape: Adjust areas that may make the nose look too wide, narrow, or uneven
- Support better breathing: Improve airflow when structural concerns are involved
- Create natural-looking results: Support refinement that does not look overly altered
CONDITIONS RHINOPLASTY CAN ADDRESS
Every rhinoplasty is planned around the patient’s individual anatomy. During your consultation, your surgeon may evaluate concerns such as:
- A dorsal hump or bump on the bridge of the nose
- A wide, narrow, crooked, or asymmetrical nose
- A bulbous, drooping, or upturned nasal tip
- Nostrils that appear too wide or asymmetrical
- A nose that feels out of proportion with the rest of the face
- Breathing concerns related to nasal structure
- Changes caused by injury or previous nasal surgery
GOOD CANDIDATES FOR RHINOPLASTY
Good candidates for rhinoplasty are generally patients who are bothered by the appearance or function of their nose and want a realistic, personalized surgical plan. Rhinoplasty may be appropriate for patients in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond, depending on health, anatomy, and goals. You may be a candidate if you:
- Want to improve nasal shape or size: You may want to refine the bridge, tip, or overall proportions of your nose.
- Have nasal asymmetry or a hump: Rhinoplasty may address a nasal hump, asymmetry, or proportions that feel unbalanced.
- Have breathing concerns: Functional concerns may be related to nasal structure.
- Are in good overall health: Good general health helps support surgery and recovery.
- Do not smoke or are willing to stop: Avoiding tobacco before and after surgery can support proper healing.
- Have realistic expectations: Rhinoplasty may improve the appearance or function of the nose, but it cannot create perfection.
During your consultation, Dr. Shah or Dr. Prassinos will examine your nose, discuss your goals, review your medical history, and explain whether rhinoplasty is the right option for you.
RHINOPLASTY AND NOSE RESHAPING OPTIONS
Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery offers several rhinoplasty-related options based on each patient’s goals and anatomy:
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
Cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on improving nasal shape while maintaining facial harmony. This option may be helpful for patients who want visible refinement without a result that looks overly changed.
Male Rhinoplasty
Male rhinoplasty addresses nasal shape while considering masculine facial proportions. Patients interested in male nose surgery may benefit from reviewing dedicated male rhinoplasty information and before-and-after examples.
Rhinoplasty for Hump Bridge
Hump bridge rhinoplasty focuses on smoothing or reducing a visible bump along the bridge of the nose. This is a common concern for patients who feel their profile appears too prominent from the side.
Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty
Non-surgical rhinoplasty, sometimes called liquid rhinoplasty, uses injectable filler to make temporary changes to nasal contour. It may be appropriate for select patients who want subtle changes without surgery, but it cannot reduce nose size or correct structural breathing concerns.

RHINOPLASTY SURGERY PROCESS
Your rhinoplasty process begins with a private consultation. This appointment gives you time to discuss what bothers you about your nose, ask questions, and learn what may be possible based on your anatomy. A simplified rhinoplasty process may include:
- Consultation and evaluation: Your surgeon reviews your goals, medical history, nasal structure, and breathing concerns
- Personalized surgical planning: Your surgeon explains the recommended approach, expected changes, limitations, recovery, and cost factors
- Surgery: Rhinoplasty is performed using techniques selected for your anatomy and goals. Surgery typically takes about 1 to 3 hours, depending on what is being done
- Early recovery: Swelling, bruising, and congestion are expected during the first stage of healing.
- Follow-up care: Your surgeon monitors healing and provides instructions as swelling gradually improves

PREPARING FOR RHINOPLASTY
Before rhinoplasty, patients receive personalized preparation instructions from the surgical team. These instructions may vary based on health history, medications, and the details of the procedure. Common preparation steps may include:
- Medical evaluations: Complete required medical evaluations or lab work.
- Medication guidance: Avoid certain medications or supplements as directed.
- Smoking avoidance: Stop smoking before and after surgery, if applicable.
- Transportation planning: Arrange transportation for the day of surgery.
- Recovery planning: Plan time away from work, school, or strenuous activity.
- Home setup: Prepare a comfortable recovery area at home.
Your surgeon and care team will review your instructions before surgery so you understand what to expect.
RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY
Rhinoplasty recovery is different for every patient, but most people can expect swelling, bruising, and congestion during the early stage of healing. These symptoms usually improve gradually, while subtle swelling can take longer to resolve. Final rhinoplasty results typically develop over 12 to 18 months. A general recovery timeline may include:
- Days 1 to 5: Swelling, bruising, pressure, and nasal congestion are common. Rest and follow your post-operative instructions closely.
- Days 7 to 14: Many patients begin feeling more comfortable and may return to work or social activities when cleared by their surgeon.
- First few months: Swelling continues to decrease, and nasal definition becomes more noticeable.
- 12 to 18 months: Final refinement may continue as residual swelling resolves.
If you have questions about what to expect after rhinoplasty, your surgeon will review your recovery plan during your consultation.

COST OF RHINOPLASTY IN COLUMBUS & DUBLIN, OH
The total cost of rhinoplasty surgery depends on several factors, including medical examinations, surgeon’s fees, facility fees, anesthesia, post-surgical supplies, the techniques used, and the time needed to perform the procedure.
Because each rhinoplasty is customized, costs vary from patient to patient. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is typically not covered by insurance. When breathing concerns or structural issues are involved, coverage may depend on the patient’s insurance plan and the medical reason for treatment.
Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery offers financing options, including CareCredit, for qualified patients. During your consultation, the team can explain your quote, payment options, and what is included in the total cost.

Rhinoplasty FAQs
Is it possible to have a non-surgical rhinoplasty at the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery?
Yes! We offer non-surgical rhinoplasties, also known as liquid rhinoplasties, and they are done as in-office procedures that last from 30 – 60 minutes. Liquid nose jobs are performed using filler, usually Restylane or Juvéderm, and therefore do not come with the risks that surgery would, nor do they leave scars or require downtime or recovery. Following a liquid rhinoplasty, the patient can drive himself or herself home.
Non-surgical rhinoplasties are best for people who want minor changes. The following can be done with this type of procedure:
- Small hump correction
- Tip raising
- Bridge emphasis
The non-surgical rhinoplasty is a great alternative to receiving a full rhinoplasty; however it has its limits, and therefore is not for everyone. It does not shrink the nose or narrow the nostrils, for example. Those corrections would require surgery. Liquid rhinoplasty is ideal for someone who is looking to correct mild to moderate nasal imperfections.
Is rhinoplasty safe?
The surgery itself is painless due to anesthesia, but mild discomfort may occur during the first 1–3 days of recovery. Dr. Shah advises using extra-strength Tylenol as needed and staying ahead of the pain. As discomfort eases, you can gradually reduce the dosage.
Is rhinoplasty painful?
The surgery is painless due to anesthesia, though mild discomfort may occur during the first 1–3 days of recovery. Dr. Shah advises using extra-strength Tylenol as needed and recommends managing pain proactively. Gradually reduce the dosage as discomfort subsides.
What types of patients usually receive a rhinoplasty?
Will I look completely different after my rhinoplasty?
You will look like yourself, only better. Many people worry that after a rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, they will look completely different. Top surgeon Dr. Bivik Shah in Columbus, Ohio, takes great pride in making sure that the results are very natural, smooth, and provide just the right amount of change to give you your desired look. During your consultation, you and Dr. Shah will discuss your exact goals and concerns in order to decide what the best course of action would be.
I just have a small bump—do I need a full rhinoplasty?
If you are interested in making minor changes to the nose with surgery, you would only need to have a minor procedure that can often be performed under IV sedation (also known as twilight anesthesia), under which you are awake. If you are looking to make minor changes without surgery, we also offer non-surgical rhinoplasties.
How long does a rhinoplasty take?
A rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, typically takes about 1 to 3 hours, depending on what is being done.
Do rhinoplasties/nose surgeries leave scars?
Sometimes—but they are not typically visible. For a “closed” rhinoplasty, all of the scars are on the inside of the nose, so they are not visible at all. For an “open” rhinoplasty, a scar is left at the bottom of the nose, but it usually heals extremely well and often becomes invisible.
Rhinoplasty Insurance Coverage
At the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery, we have a top rhinoplasty surgeon Bivik Shah, M.D., who is highly experienced in both open and closed rhinoplasties, and septoplasties to improve breathing. One of the most common questions from patients interested in getting a nose job is whether or not insurance covers the cost of the surgery.
It is important to keep in mind that insurance only pays for a procedure to correct breathing problems and does not cover the part where the nose is made to “look better.” The price of the cosmetic portion of the surgery—that is, the part that is not purely corrective—is not covered because its purpose is solely aesthetic.
Dr. Shah, a top rhinoplasty surgeon in Columbus, uses his expertise for cosmetic improvements of the nose, and therefore, though his procedures may improve breathing, our practice does not take insurance. But since we have our own surgery centers, it is usually less expensive to have the surgery in one of those than it is to have it partially paid for at a hospital. We have two operating rooms; one in Columbus (E Broad St.), Ohio, and one in Dublin, Ohio.

Are the results of a rhinoplasty permanent?
Yes. Unlike temporary, non-surgical options (such as "liquid rhinoplasty" which uses dermal fillers that naturally break down over time), surgical rhinoplasty permanently alters the underlying bone and cartilage structures of the nose. While your face will continue to mature and age naturally, the structural and functional shape changes made during your surgery are lifelong.
