    Blepharoplasty Columbus

Are people saying you look tired? Do you have bags with dark circles under your eyes? Many of our patients are seeking a solution to these problems. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) at our office serving Dayton, Columbus, and all of Ohio, can help individuals who have uneven, droopy eyelids or puffiness under the eyes to once again have a vibrant and alert look.

Eyelid surgery is very common and is routinely performed at our Ohio practice. As one of Dr. Bivik Shah's most frequently performed procedures, eyelid surgery can firm your lower eyelid skin, remove extra skin in your upper eyelid, soften the wrinkles between your eyebrows, eliminate bags underneath the eyes, soften eye creases, and sometimes lighten the dark circles under the eyes.
If you would like to discuss this versatile and effective procedure, contact the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery for an eyelid surgery consultation today. The professionals at our office serving Dayton and Columbus, Ohio are ready to answer any questions you may have.

Do Other Procedures Achieve the Same Results as Eyelid Surgery?

No, eyelid surgery is the only treatment option to firm lower eyelids, remove excess skin from upper eyelids, and eliminate bags under the eyes. However, there are treatment options that can improve on the already excellent benefits of eyelid surgery. Our patients from Dayton and Columbus, Ohio many times choose mild chemical peels to help further tighten lower eyelid skin. Botox® Cosmetic can help reduce wrinkles between the eyes and fillers such as Restylane® to help reduce fines lines. Laser skin rejuvenation is another excellent way to remove fine lines and wrinkles from around the eyes.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

To be a candidate for eyelid surgery, it is important that you do not have other significant medical problems, eye problems, or high blood pressure. You also must not be taking blood thinners. Eyelid surgery is often the perfect solution for patients who have a tired look to the eyes, bags under the eyes, puffiness around the eyes, loose skin under the eyes, and/or extra or loose upper eyelid skin. Blepharoplasty candidates must be 18 years or older in order to qualify for surgery. To learn if you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Bivik Shah today.

Is Eyelid Surgery a Major Operation?

All surgeries carry some risk. However, eyelid surgery is not considered to be a “major” operation. During eyelid surgery, Dr. Shah need only use twilight anesthesia to keep his patients from Dayton and elsewhere across Ohio comfortable. Twilight anesthesia is used during these types of minor surgeries to relax patients without fully anesthetizing them to the point of sleep. Numbing medications such as Novocain™ will also be used.

How Long Will I Need to Take off Work after Eyelid Surgery?

Most people experience only minimal discomfort after eyelid surgery. Patients typically only need prescription pain medication for about one to three days following the procedure. Because the discomfort is mild, you will be able to return to light activity quickly. However, eyelid surgery patients do experience a significant amount of bruising and swelling. If you do not want anyone to know that you have had eyelid surgery, you will likely need to avoid public and social situations for about five to seven days. After that, you will be able to wear make-up to cover up any bruising that remains. Usually, it only takes two to three weeks to return to full activity.

If you would like to discuss eyelid surgery, please contact Dr. Shah at our office serving Dayton, Columbus, and all of Ohio, for a consultation.

Is There Scarring after Eyelid Surgery?

All surgery involves making an incision which will leave a scar, and eyelid surgery is no exception. Serving patients from Dayton and Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Bivik Shah at the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery use the latest plastic surgery techniques to help minimize scarring.

    How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Eyelid surgery is performed in the privacy of Dr. Bivik Shah’s state-of-the-art, fully accredited and licensed surgical suite. The majority of patients at the Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery have eyelid surgery performed with the use of twilight anesthesia. This allows our patients from Dayton, Columbus, and across Ohio to remain awake, relaxed, and to remember nothing of the procedure. Numbing agents will also be used during the procedure to further reduce discomfort. The procedure removes excess skin, muscle, and even possibly fat to aesthetically improve the appearance of the eyelids. A blepharoplasty gives patients a more refreshed look and to top it off the scar is unapparent. Eyelid surgery usually takes one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on your individual case. You will then be taken to our recovery room. Most people are monitored in our post-surgery recovery room for about 30 minutes. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure.

What Do I Need to Do to Recover from Eyelid Surgery?

Once you arrive home, it is important to simply rest. Activity should be kept to a minimum, your head should be elevated with pillows, and you should put an ice pack on your eyes intermittently. For the first day or two, you should have someone to provide you with assistance. This is because your eyes may be swollen nearly closed. After two to four days, you will return to the office to have stitches removed. Most people plan on returning to work after about five to seven days after their eyelid surgery.

What are the Risks of Eyelid Surgery?

All types of surgery are accompanied by some risks, such as infection or bleeding. Specific to eyelid surgery, there is a risk of excessive scarring, the lower eyelid pulling down or turning out, dry eyes, and the possibility that you may need to have revision surgery.
