WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANESTHESIA?

Almost everyone we take care of, worries about the Anesthesia!! To be honest, we do this all the time and if we were having surgery, we would be a little anxious (just a little)! It’s normal and almost expected!

That is why we have the best Anesthesiologist in Columbus! Dr. Hollingsworth has been with us since 2008 and she only does Plastic Surgery Anesthesia! It is so important to have someone with over 4000 cases of experience!

We offer all types of Anesthesia at our office. Together, with you, we will create the best plastic surgery treatment plan – one that keeps you safe, comfortable, and allows us to get the best plastic surgery result!

Having plastic surgery today is safer than ever before! Just about anything can be performed without general anesthesia!. There are three main types of anesthesia for plastic surgery patients.

    • numbing medication alone (Local Anesthesia) – like small liposuction, lasers, or small facial procedures (just like at a dentist office)
      • You may need someone to drive you home if you choose to take some medication to help you relax
    • IV Sedation (“Twilight Anesthesia”) – you have medications given to help you relax. You are technically awake, but very groggy and will probably sleep for most of the procedure. This is exactly what is used for colonoscopy or endoscopy procedures
      • You will need someone to drive you home
    • General Anesthesia – You are completely out – you do not hear, see, or feel anything
      • You will need someone to drive you home

    Is General Anesthesia Safe?

General Anesthesia is extremely safe! In fact, if you are healthy, the chance is about 1 out of a Million that something crazy happens

Is IV Sedation safer than General Anesthesia?

Many people think that IV sedation is more safe than General Anesthesia. However, actually both are equally safe!

LOCAL ONLY – OR NUMBING MEDICATION ONLY

This type of anesthesia is the safest. With this type of anesthesia for plastic surgery, the area that is being worked on, is numbed by injecting numbing medication (usually Lidocaine) in the area that is being worked on. This will make the area completely numb, so that you will feel nothing. The best part is that there is no recovery from the anesthesia so you can drive.

    TWILIGHT ANESTHESIA OR IV SEDATION

Twilight anesthesia is where you have a iv put in- usually your arm, and then during the plastic surgery you will receive medication through your iv to help you relax and make you a little groggy. You will not be put to sleep. This means that you do not have the risk of general anesthesia and you will not have to recover from general anesthesia. You will need someone to drive you home.

    GENERAL ANESTHESIA

This is where you are completely sleeping. You do not hear, see, or feel anything during this type of anesthesia. We have a board-certified anesthesiologist that will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and other important checks to make sure you are completely out and safe. You will need someone to drive you home afterwards.
